Simple style One of this SUV’s strongest qualities is its unfussy design. It’s built to last and designed to serve, but that’s not to say it doesn’t offer considerable road presence. Far from it. The vehicle provides plenty of ground clearance and features a muscular body, with flared wheel arches and a rising window line – all attributes that help imbue the vehicle with authority. There are plenty of colours to choose from too, including Splash White, Obsidian Grey, Cosmic Black and Magnetic Red, which are available with every trim.
LEDs as standard Entry-level LS-M grades are fitted with LED daytime running lights and bi-LED projector headlights, each offering high-intensity illumination. Meanwhile, second-tier LS-U trims add front fog lamps, which provide enhanced visibility during poor weather conditions.
Have alloys, will travel All models ride on alloy wheels as standard, ranging in size from 16 inches (LS-M grade) to 18 inches (LS-U trim). The latter come with an eye-catching two-tone twist. Alloy wheels not only look smarter than their steel counterparts, they’re just as hard-wearing. They’re lighter, too, which means they help deliver enhanced efficiency.
Attention to detail All MU-X variants are graced with several eye-catching fixtures. For example, LSM grades feature a natty bee-sting aerial and a number of colour-coded fixtures, such as door handles and side mirrors. LS-U trims add rear privacy glass and attractive and practical side steps, while replacing the aforementioned aerial with a rear-mounted shark-fin version.
Versatile interior Although it most definitely qualifies an SUV, the MU-X could just as easily be classified as an MPV. This is because it provides room for seven inside, which makes it especially good for growing families, social groups or business field trips. And the vehicle’s five-door body ensures that rear-seated passengers have very little problem getting in and out. Row two is ideal for transporting particularly young passengers, since each position features ISOFIX-ready anchor points for child seats. While it’s possible to fit two adults in the rearmost row, it’s best suited to accommodating pre-teen travellers.
Flexible storage A 235-litre boot space might not sound very generous, but that’s the minimum available. The MU-X’s rearmost seats are 60/40 split-folding and the middle row is 50/50 split-folding, meaning cargo capacity can be increased whenever needed, and in a number of different ways.
Perfect climate LS-M grades are installed with a manual air-conditioning unit, which features an integrated heater. The latter also serves as a demister, which works wonders on windows covered with condensation. Upgrade to LS-U or LS-T trims for climate control, which makes it easier to administer an ideal cabin temperature.
Audio entertainment All MU-X variants are installed with an eight-speaker sound system, featuring an MP3-compatible CD/DVD player and an AM/FM radio, as well as AUX and USB inputs. Bluetooth connectivity is a standard inclusion, too, allowing audio streaming and hands-free telephony.
Powerful performer All models are available with a choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drivetrains. Naturally, if you regularly travel across uneven terrain, the latter option will provide the vehicle with greater traction. One thing that all MU-X variants have in common is a fuel-efficient 3.0-litre diesel engine, which produces 430Nm of torque at 2,000 to 2,200 rpm for keen acceleration and effortless towing. This turbocharged, four-cylinder unit is paired with six-speed automatic transmission.
Five-star safety As befits any good family-friendly vehicle, the MU-X comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, a slew of passive features to ensure occupants are kept protected. For instance, multiple airbags are included as standard, as are seatbelt reminders, while rear doors are fitted with child-proof locks.
Parking assistance One of many standard-issue driver aids is a reversing camera, which works in conjunction with rear-mounted sensors, relaying real-time footage to the SUV’s touchscreen. Thanks to simple-to-follow guide marks, reversing in pretty much any situation is made all the more straightforward.
Security The MU-X is fitted with anti-intrusion side bars, an engine immobiliser and a warning alarm. The latter activates the vehicle’s headlamps and parking lights whenever the ignition key is removed without the driver’s say-so. LS-U trims additionally feature an anti-theft alarm system.
